Gallivanting
In the spring of 2002, the Deja Vu sailed down the St. Lawrence
River and visited Montreal, Quebec City, the Gaspé, the Magdalen
Islands, Cape Breton and the west coast of Newfoundland. In September
2002, the Deja Vu returned to Lake Ontario via the St. Lawrence
River. By the spring of 2007, the wonderful memories of that most
excellent summer of cruising has produced an urge to do it again. During
the winter of 2007/2008, plans were made to again cruise down the St.
Lawrence in the springtime.
This summer (2008), some
of the places we hope to visit include; the Saguenay Fiord, the Magdalen
Islands, Prince Edward Island, the Bras d'Or Lakes and the west Coast of
Newfoundland. While on the west coast of Newfoundland, we plan on
cruising the Bay of Islands and Bonne Bay. Both bays are actually deep
fiords surrounded by mountainous terrain. The Bay of Islands will take
you into the port of Corner Brook, while Bonne Bay will take into the
area of Gros Morne National Park. Google Earth gives a good feel for
this area.
Although it
sounds like we are going "to do it again", the 2008 cruise will be quite
different in many ways. The Deja Vu was a 27 foot C&C sloop,
while
Gallivanting is a 35 foot Niagara sloop. After wintering in the
Maritimes, the adventure will continue into 2009, with a planned cruise
down the New England coast to New York City and eventually returning to
Lake Ontario via the Hudson River.
Based on our visit to
western Newfoundland in the summer of 2009, a piece was put together to be
included in the Fall 2009 issue of The Port Hole. The Port
Hole is the official publication of the Canadian Power and Sail
Squadrons and and is published on a quarterly basis as an insert in
Canadian Yachting Magazine.
The piece, entitled "Sailing along the
French Shore" was published in the Fall 2009 issue of "The Port Hole" and was
inserted in the September, 2009 issue of Canadian Yachting.
The original, unedited version of the
piece can found at;
